Snapback, the mean reversion indicator MT4 that waits for the rubber band to snap

Price is like a rubber band. It can be stretched far away from its usual level, but the further it goes, the harder it wants to come back. Snapback is a mean reversion indicator MT4 that measures how far price has been stretched from its own centre and fires one arrow only when an extreme stretch starts to snap back.

The arrow does not repaint, does not move and does not disappear. It needs a closed candle, and once it prints, it stays exactly where it printed.

Real chart, gold on M15. A sharp sell off flings price far below its own centre. Then the first candle closes back up and the buy arrow prints at 4265.00. The stop goes under the low of the flush at 4235.06, a risk of 300 pips, or 30 dollars on gold. Over the next two days gold climbed to 4399.65, a move of 1346 pips, more than four times the risk. Every price comes from the exact candle history of that chart.

What mean reversion means

Mean reversion is the idea that price tends to drift back towards its average after going too far. Panic selling and greedy buying both push price past any fair level, and sooner or later the crowd that pushed it has to close.

However, trading it blind is dangerous. A market that is far from its average can go even further, and buying every drop is the fastest way to catch a falling knife. That is why Snapback does two things. First, it only arms when the stretch is truly extreme. Then, it waits for price to start coming back before it fires.

How Snapback reads the stretch

  1. The centre. It tracks where price has been living over the last candles.
  2. The stretch. It measures the distance from that centre in the market’s own units of normal movement. That way a stretch on gold and a stretch on EURUSD mean the same thing.
  3. The overstretch. When the stretch reaches an extreme, small dots mark the candles on the chart. No arrow yet.
  4. The snap. The first candle that closes back towards the centre, in the right colour, gives the arrow.

As a result, you never enter while price is still falling. You enter when the band has already started to pull back.

How to trade the mean reversion indicator MT4 signals

  • Enter on the close of the arrow candle. The snap has started.
  • Stop beyond the extreme of the stretch. If price makes a new extreme, the band did not snap.
  • First target, the centre. That is where the stretch ends, so take part of the trade there.
  • Let the rest run. After a real flush, price often overshoots the centre on the other side, like gold did in the chart.

Also, keep the lot size in line with the stop. Extreme moves come with wide candles, so the stop on a snap is usually wider than on a pattern trade.

Markets and timeframes

Gold XAUUSD M15, the best of the lot
Major pairs M15, same rules
Higher timeframes H1 gives fewer, larger snaps

M15 on gold is where this mean reversion indicator MT4 did its best work. Gold overreacts to news more than most markets, therefore its stretches are bigger and so are its snaps.

What is inside

  • Snap buys after extreme drops and snap sells after extreme rallies.
  • Overstretch dots, so you can watch the setup form before the arrow.
  • Stretch length, extreme level and snap confirmation, all editable.
  • Arrows on closed candles only. They do not repaint, move or disappear.
  • Popup, sound, push and email alerts, each one switchable.
  • Premium dark chart theme, applied on attach and restored on remove.

Besides, it reads price only, so any broker and any account works. If you want robots that trade by themselves, browse our automated robots, and the rest of the manual set is in our chart tools for traders.

Questions about this mean reversion indicator MT4

Does it repaint? No. The arrow needs a closed candle. Once it prints, it does not move and it does not disappear.

Why did I see dots but no arrow? The dots mean price is overstretched. The arrow only comes when a candle actually closes back, and sometimes the stretch simply keeps going. That is the knife the dots warn you about.

Can I get more signals? Yes. Lower the extreme level. Keep in mind that the default was tuned so only the real flushes fire.

Do you have the other version? Yes. This is the MetaTrader 4 build, and Snapback for MT5 reads the same stretches on MetaTrader 4.

Trading involves risk. Signals are information, not advice, so try any new tool on a demo account first and only trade money you can afford to lose.
