Pip Value Calculator

Use this pip value calculator to see what one pip is worth in your own account currency, on currency pairs, gold, indices and crypto. Live quotes feed the maths, so the number matches what your broker will really credit or debit when the trade closes.

What are pips in forex?

A pip in forex means the smallest price change a currency pair can make, except for fractions of a pip or ‘pipettes’.

For most currency pairs 1 pip is 0.0001; for currency pairs with the Japanese Yen, such as USD/JPY, 1 pip is 0.01. When trading metals, 1 pip for Gold and Silver is 0.01.

When the EUR/USD moves up from 1.0925 to 1.0926, the change is 1 pip. With 5-digit pricing, if the EUR/USD moves up from 1.09255 to 1.09260, the move would be half a pip.

How to use the pip value calculator

Instrument: Traders can select from major forex crosses, minors, exotics, the most popular cryptocurrencies (such as ADA, BTC, ETH, LTC and XRP) and several commodities, including Gold, Silver and Oil. Let’s choose for our example the EUR/USD.

Trade size: Forex pairs are 100,000 units per 1 lot, but units per 1 lot vary on non-forex pairs. In this field there’s also the option of calculating the pip value based on the lots traded, or, the units traded. Let’s choose, for our example, a trading size lot of 10,000 currency units (0.10 mini-lot).

Deposit currency: Pip values are different for each FX pair and for each cryptocurrency cross. Pip values are also subject to the current market/exchange quotes. Selecting an account currency in this field will enable an accurate calculation of the pip value, for the selected instrument, in a trader’s account base currency (from AUD to ZAR). We choose EUR as our deposit currency.

Now, we hit the “Calculate” button.

The results: The pip calculator uses a market price live feed with the current interbank rate (in a 5-digit format) and it will display the current pip value based on the selected account base currency (in our example, the EUR).

So, the pip value for a 0.10 lot of EUR/USD, with a market rate of 1.21580, on a EUR trading account, is currently €0.8225.

Traders should note that for trading accounts in other base currencies, such as GBP or AUD, pip values can vary, depending on the current market rate for the GBP/USD, or AUD/USD, for example. The following conversion formula is applied to calculate the pip value in other currencies:

Pip Value = (One Pip / Exchange Rate) * Lot Size

The result would be:

Pip Value = (0.0001 / 1.21580) * 10,000 = €0.8225.

How the pip value calculator works out the number

In fact, the formula behind the pip value calculator is refreshingly simple. One pip, multiplied by the units you trade, gives the value in the quote currency, and the calculator then converts that into your account currency at the live rate.

On EUR/USD a pip is 0.0001 and a standard lot is 100,000 units, so one pip is worth exactly 10 dollars. On USD/JPY a pip is 0.01, which gives 1,000 yen per standard lot, and at 147.00 that comes to about 6.80 dollars. Gold works differently again, because one lot is 100 ounces and one pip of 0.01 is worth 1 dollar. Consequently, the same 30 pip stop means three very different amounts of money depending on what you trade.

One pip is 10 dollars on EUR/USD, 13.40 on EUR/GBP and only 1 dollar on gold.

All of these use one standard lot with a dollar account. Divide by ten for mini lots and by one hundred for micro lots.

InstrumentOne pip per standard lotWhy it differs
EUR/USD10.00 USDQuote currency is the dollar, so no conversion
GBP/USD10.00 USDSame reason, the number never moves
USD/JPYabout 6.80 USD1,000 JPY converted at the live rate
EUR/GBPabout 13.40 USD10 GBP converted into dollars
AUD/CADabout 7.25 USD10 CAD converted into dollars
XAU/USD (gold)1.00 USD100 ounce contract, pip of 0.01

Notice that only the pairs quoted in dollars stay fixed. Everywhere else the value drifts with the exchange rate, which is precisely why traders reach for a pip value calculator instead of memorising a number.

Why your account currency changes the pip value calculator result

For example, two traders can open the identical EUR/USD position and still risk different amounts. If your account is in euros, that 10 dollar pip becomes roughly 9.20 euros, and it shifts a little every day as the rate moves.

For a dollar account the effect is invisible on dollar pairs, yet it shows up immediately on crosses such as EUR/GBP or AUD/CAD. Therefore, set the deposit currency field correctly before you read anything else, otherwise every number below it is wrong by a few percent.

Use the pip value calculator first, then size the position

Pip value on its own does not tell you how much to trade. It is the bridge between your stop loss in pips and your risk in money, and the order goes like this.

  1. Decide the risk in money, for example 1 percent of a 5,000 dollar account, which is 50 dollars.
  2. Measure the stop loss on the chart, say 25 pips.
  3. Divide: 50 dollars over 25 pips gives 2 dollars per pip, so on EUR/USD that is 0.20 lots.

The position size calculator does all three steps at once, and the profit calculator then turns the target into money. For a stop that is anchored to real structure rather than a round number, an indicator such as Iron Bell marks the level for you on the chart.

Pip value calculator questions traders ask

What is a pipette? Basically, it is one tenth of a pip, the fifth decimal that most brokers now quote. Ten pipettes make one pip, so 1.08501 to 1.08511 is a single pip.

Is a pip the same on gold and on indices? No. Gold moves in 0.01 steps worth 1 dollar per lot, while index contracts vary so much between brokers that you really do have to check the specification.

Does the spread change the pip value? Not at all. The spread costs you a number of pips, yet each of those pips is still worth exactly what the pip value calculator says.

Why does my profit differ by a few cents? Because the conversion rate moves between the moment you open and the moment you close. On crosses that difference is normal and small, while on dollar pairs it does not exist.
