Chokehold, the NR7 indicator MT4 that catches the market holding its breath
Before a market runs, it goes quiet. Ranges shrink, candles get small, and one of them ends up narrower than any of the last seven. Old floor traders called that candle the NR7, and it is one of the best warnings that a move is loading. Chokehold is an NR7 indicator MT4 that finds it for you and fires when price breaks out of it.
The arrow does not repaint, does not move and does not disappear. It needs a closed candle, and once it prints it stays exactly where it printed.
Real chart, gold on M5. The dotted lines are the roof and the floor of each narrow candle. Price squeezes, then one red body closes under the floor and the sell arrow prints at 4374.58. The stop goes just above the squeeze at 4377.51, a risk of only 29 pips, under 3 dollars on gold. From there gold slid to 4358.28, a move of 163 pips, more than five times the risk. Every price comes from the exact candle history of that chart.
Why a narrow candle is worth watching
Markets move between calm and storm, and the two take turns. Low volatility does not last, so the tightest candle of a stretch usually sits right before the expansion.
However, small candles appear all the time on a quiet chart and most of them lead nowhere. That is why Chokehold asks for three things at once: the candle must be the narrowest of the last seven, it must be genuinely small against a normal candle of that market, and the break must arrive with a real body, not with a twitch.
What Chokehold checks before it fires
- The choke. The narrowest range of the last seven candles, and under half the size of an average candle.
- The lines. Its high and its low stay on the chart for a few candles, drawn as dotted levels.
- The release. A candle closes beyond one of those lines with a body at least as big as the average.
If nothing breaks within the allowed bars, the setup expires and the lines disappear. In other words, the tool never keeps an old squeeze alive just to force a trade.
How to trade the NR7 indicator MT4 signals
- Enter on the close of the break candle. The squeeze has resolved.
- Stop on the other side of the choke candle. Because that candle is tiny, the stop is tiny too.
- Target several times the risk. Since the stop is so small, even a modest move pays well.
- Protect it fast. Therefore, move the stop to breakeven once price has travelled as far as your risk.
Markets and timeframes
| Gold XAUUSD | M5, the one we recommend |
| Major pairs | M5 and M15, same rules |
| Higher timeframes | M30 and H1 give fewer and bigger setups |
On gold M5 this NR7 indicator MT4 gives several signals a day, and the stop stays small on all of them. Also, the busy London and New York hours are where the release tends to travel furthest.
What is inside

Questions about this NR7 indicator MT4
Does it repaint? No. Both the squeeze and the break come from closed candles. Once the arrow prints, it does not move and it does not disappear.
What does NR7 mean? Narrow Range 7: the candle with the smallest range of the last seven. You can change that number if you prefer NR4 or NR10.
Can I get more signals? Yes. Raise the maximum size, or switch off the inside candle filter, and the tool arms more squeezes.
Do you have the other version? Yes. This is the MetaTrader 4 build, and Chokehold for MT5 finds the same squeezes on MetaTrader 4.
Trading involves risk. Signals are information, not advice, so try any new tool on a demo account first and only trade money you can afford to lose.
